The trendsetters of Japan have had their finger on the fashion pulse for decades, and these areas are a must-see if you’re hunting creative, forward-thinking fashion.
Osaka creatives flock to Tachibana-dori, known as Orange Street to locals (the tachibana is a citrus fruit). Tachibana-dori is full of fashionable boutiques that line either side of a 1,000 metre stretch of backstreets.
Tokyo is the home of trendsetting in Japan, from its far-out Harajuku girls to über-stylish designer scene. That scene is well catered for in Minato-ku, which is home to forward-thinking boutiques such as Loveless, Maison Kitsuné, and Dress Camp Aoyama.
Meanwhile, the upmarket neighbourhood of Daikanyama is the ideal backdrop for a suite of modern trend stores, including Hollywood Ranch Market, denim makers Daikanyama UES, and Okura.
Finally, don’t skip the small neighbourhood of Shimo-Kitazawa. Lined with interesting boutiques and hole-in-the-wall bars (perfect for grabbing a drink between purchases), Shimo-Kitazawa boasts Tokyo’s highest concentration of vintage-clothing stores and is a stone’s throw from the popular Shibuya.
