Rotable in Owase: Popup Restaurant Series Launches to Celebrate Local Cuisine and Culture, Revitalise Rural Japan
Rotable kicks off its first in a series of events on aimed at celebrating and revitalising Japan’s rural communities, with an open-air popup restaurant in the port city of Owase on Saturday, 4 November.
In the garden of a 100-year-old traditional Japanese house, over 100 guests, including local fisherman, farmers, craftspeople, government representatives, residents, and visitors from across Japan will be served multi-course meals of locally sourced vegetables, and seafood caught fresh from Owase Bay.
By uniting this diverse group around a shared table, organizer Taro Yokoyama hopes to raise awareness of the unique cuisine and culture of Japan’s regional areas, to facilitate new connections, and to inspire actions that help reinvigorate and sustain these communities, which have seen a 40% decline in population from 1950 to 2014.
“In rural towns, once the older generation is lost, we lose with them an immense amount of knowledge of local industries, food, arts and crafts, and an understanding of local ecosystems,
“When I was onboard the fishing boat in Owase for the first time, I felt the deep connection between the ocean and the surrounding mountains. I wanted to share this feeling, and the stories of the community,” says Taro.
Lunch and dinner meals will be offered, both cooked by owner and head chef of renowed Tokyo restaurant, Pignon, Rimpei Yoshikawa, who sources seafood for his restaurant from Owase. Sommelier Dai Niwa, of Parc wine bar in Tokyo, will serve a custom cocktail infused with local flavors like togarashi peppers and cedar, as well as a selection of natural wines.
The event will be held at Tennmasou, 161 Tenmura, Owase City, Mie Prefecture. Lunch (seated, set course) is 5,000 yen, starting 1pm; Dinner (seated, set course) is 8,000 yen, starting 5:30pm; Dinner (standing, buffet-style) is 3,000 yen, starting 6:30pm. For bookings, email [email protected]
